A fact of life is that you can’t please everyone – no matter how hard you try. In fact, if you try to please everyone, you’ll end up making most of them unhappy. That’s ironic, I know. But it’s hard to argue with reality. A business, though, must have as its goal the objective to please everyone they do business with. You must choose only those customers that avail you of the opportunity to (1) actually solve their problem and (2) make them happy during the process. Not all problems or circumstances avail you of doing that.
For example, if your company is focused on commercial flat roofing in Denver and someone calls upon you to do residential shingle work in Oregon, that’s just not going to work. If you tried to make that homeowner in Oregon happy by taking on that work, you’d end up displeasing them significantly because your company just wasn’t set up to service that kind of work that far away. So in that case, you have to say “no.”
